Minervie and Chip 15

Chip was reading on the floor, and Minervie came into Chip’s room and sat down on his bed.

“I didn’t do anything,” he complained meekly.

“I am here to explain, not to yell. You are being here to learn,” Minervie said. “Now sit up, and mind what I say.”

Chip turned his book over on the floor, and sat up cross legged. He didn’t really understand the difference between yelling and a lecture, so he was braced.

“Do you know what she is, this Saraia?” Minervie started.

Chip responded, “A kid with pointy ears who makes deliveries.”

Minervie corrects, “An elf who has the same pointy ears of all elf-kind, and she is young for an elf, definitely over 20 years, probably less than 30. And yes, like most her age, she has a job.”

“Okay?” Chip was used to hearing about magical creatures and meeting them from time to time.

Minervie continued, “Elf ears are sensitive. They don’t like their ears being touched. Well, most don’t like it, find it quite invasive.” Chip stared blankly. “If Aunt Betty asks if she can touch your cheek?”

Chip recoiled, “She won’t touch, she will squeeze and make me look stupid.”

Minervie smiled, “There. You reacted just the same as Saraia just now.”

“Oh? But I just wanted to touch,” Chip protested.

Minervie looked down on him, “Chip you did right to ask instead of doing, but with someone you do not know very well, it is also best to not do and not ask. She has no idea what you might do once you have her ear in your hand. And even if you just touched, she would feel like you do when Aunt Betty squeezes your cheeks too hard.” Minervie got up to continue her day.

Chip asked, “Grandma, why does Aunt Betty always grab my cheeks?”

Minervie frowned, “Chip, not all grown-ups learn to listen when they were young. Then they are surprised when I stop inviting them over.”

Chip said, “You stopped inviting her?”

“Yes, Chip, she wouldn’t stop with your cheeks, and she didn’t listen to my explanation, so she has not been invited back.”
