Prompt Word: Drill
Minervie and Chip 16
Chip was playing in his room when Minervie called from the den, “Chip, why don’t you go play in the woods?”
Chip jumped up and ran out the back door, into the edge of the woods at the far corner of the garden, and dove right back into the neighbor’s back garden, and kept running past six other homes.
Chip knocked on the back door. After a minute, Mindy opened it, “Oh Chip, what are you doing here?”
Chip replied, “Grandma told me to play in the woods.”
Minervie smelled it first, then turned around to confirm. No doubt an uninvited guest. “Chip, why don’t you go play in the woods?” Minervie called before the appirition could fully manifest. She heard the back door bang closed as the creature, a demon, manifested over the home’s focus.
The demon was intimidating as it leaned forward towards Minervie. Then it took a step and fell flat on its face as it hadn’t noticed manifesting with a coat rack through its left thigh.
Chip sat at Mindy’s kitchen table expectantly, and was soon confused as Mindy was calling someone with some magic instead of giving him a treat like usual.
Mindy started on the call, “Chip is here with the emergency words, and this is not a drill. … Yes, I think Minervie is in trouble. … Come here, and we’ll go together.” Off the call, she kneeled down in front of Chip in that way grownups only do when there’s bad news.
Mindy said seriously, “I’m going to need you to stay here in this kitchen while Wendell and I go check on your grandmother.”
“Okay,” Chip said, definitely worried.
A rather massive oni, ducked his head into the kitchen, “Mindy, I’m here. Oh, hi Chip, stay brave and don’t leave this kitchen. There are barriers here to keep you safe.”
Chip nodded, hugging his knees to his chest. Wendell and Mindy headed out the front door, leaving Chip alone.
