Prompt Word: Lease and Rent
Minervie and Chip 18
In that Gathering Wood behind Minervie’s cottage home, where strange creatures gathered, an old Treant was talking to their troublesome seedling, “You need to understand. You were far weaker than the spider. My trunk will take another spring to recover fully.”
The youthful bush of a Treant just replied, “Weak,” in a non-committal way.
“Yes, you are. The witch would not hesitate to smite you if you cause trouble again.”
“Whatever,” the sprout asked, “What happened to the spider anyway?”
“Do you not see anything? The spider was rent to a thousand pieces once the witch caught up with it,” the treant spread his branches out in front and around themself. “I was caught in her spell, and she was fully aware that YOU helped that spider grab the child, and she blamed ME for YOUR doings.”
The sprout was in disbelief of any of this. It didn’t make sense. But looking around, they did see bits of hard flakes of something. Then they noticed so many little ants and beetles cleaning up what little was left. “Wait, what did I do?”
“You tell me, you stupid seed!” the Treant was having none of this.
“I spoke to the child, and the spider snuck up on both of us!” the spout protested.
“Not to me. Explain to the witch, and you may have a renewed lease on life.”
