Prompt Word: Last

Minervie and Chip 25

Looking ridiculous, wearing cargo shorts over a pair of jeans, Chip followed close behind Minervie as they walked into the Gathering Wood. Minervie was not following the usual trail, but was heading to the spring.

“Grandma, this isn’t the way to Greandle’s clearing,” Chip was clueless in so many ways, but he did have a good sense of direction for his age.

Minervie answered, “No, it isn’t, but they’ll find us soon enough.”

Chip asked, “How?”

Minervie replied, “You just said their name aloud in the forest. They surely know you are here, now.”

Indeed, along the stream, not near their usual clearing, nor near the spring that is the source of the stream, Greandle did hear his name on the wind, and felt compelled to walk up the stream toward its source, though slower than he was just a few months ago.

Chip declared, “Oh, there’s the spring!”

Minervie turned toward him in some annoyance, “Chip, you do realize that half of the creatures of the wood specifically want to eat you?”

“No, I have many friends here,” Chip said with the stupid confidence that only naive youth can bring.

“You were literally taken by a giant spider only a few weeks ago,” Minervie said flatly.

“But he didn’t eat me, you came and took me home!” Chip declared, as if there were no other way that story could have ended.

Minervie, angry now, “I hope your stupid confidence is not the last thing that goes through your head before you get eaten, or worse.”

At this, a shadow cast between them, and Greandle added in his low groan, “The witch of the wood is true, half the wood does want to eat you. You have …”

Minervie interrupted, “That’s enough out of you.”
