Minervie stood with her back to the spring pond at the head of the creek, with her eyes closed. She said, “Chip, you remember the healing I taught, yes?”
“Yes,” said Chip.
Minervie continued, “You see the dark, shiny spot on the treant?”
“Yes.”
“Good, do your healing spell starting at the edge, but make sure you tell them not to move.”
“Okay. Don’t move,” and Chip started to concentrate.
The treant shrieked like a rusty hinged gate in a wind storm.
Chip stopped. A large boil of sap and splinters of dark wood had appeared where Chip had been doing his spell. Chip started, “Grandma, did I …”
At that moment, a horse head struck out from the spring toward Minervie, and in an instant it was locked in place by Minervie’s left arm. It changed form to resemble a human boy, and at that point there was a snapping noise, and Minervie threw the creature, now with a magic belt clasped around it, away from the water.

“Kurwa, I chip a nail,” she took a breath. “Chip it looks like you are doing fine. You are heal fast, so move the magic around the edge a bit more … szybki, uh, quick. I need to deal with this Kelpie I fished up.”
“I can heal on my own, in fact I’m fine,” Greandle the treant moaned.
Chip replied, “Grandma says this must be done, so don’t move.”
