Prompt Word: Land

Penny Collins, Business Manager 6

McMahon pointed from the left as the men nodded along, “This is Mr. Archos, Mr. Juniper, and Mr. Ventes.”

Mr. Ventes added, “I’m not a boss, I’m the lawyer.” He lifted his briefcase some, “There are a few things for you to sign, I’ll go over them with you, later.”

Penny was mostly overwhelmed, as Joan Ismail circled around and came up next to her.

Mr. Archos cleared his throat, “Please have a seat on whatever logs you can find. I apologize there isn’t a proper office.”

Everyone found a place in an almost semicircle, except Mr. Archos who remained standing. Joan said, “No need to apologize.”

Mr. Juniper responded, “Oh he does. He owns this whole block, but is more keen to rent it out than give us a proper office.”

Mr. Archos shot back, “I guess you have land you don’t need? Nevermind, let’s get this underway.” He went on for a while explaining the payroll mistake that allows this plan to work, and what that means for Joan and Penny.

Then there was the reveal. Penny and Joan make the same amount of money. They were both surprised, but Penny was even more surprised that HR’s Bob Coke had been bragging about how little Joan was making. Then she realized that he’d been rubbing it in her face.

Mr. Juniper stood to have his say, “To move forward with this plan, we’ll need both of you to cooperate.”

Joan said, “What happens if we don’t all agree?”

Mr. Ventes spoke up, “I file a complaint with the company about getting both of your dues, along with the refund, and we forever close the book on this opportunity. Then the union goes back to having McMahon as the only reliable source of information. How about the three of us go over the smaller details, at my office?”

The moved between storage pens and gardens down to the far end of the block where Mr. Ventes had his office, and he started going over details.
