Prompt Word: Mouse

Minervie and Chip 32

Minervie stood in the Gathering Wood, next to a tree on a gentle hill. Between tree roots, among an overgrowth of native plants was a hole. “Come out and face me, and we’ll talk. If I have to come for you, you WILL be sorry,” Minervie warned.

A horned rabbit came up, breathing very fast, and stood there, then after about 15 seconds moved off to one side. More came out until there were 80 in front of the tree. Minervie, pointed at one, “where’s your daughter?”

The horned rabbit turned around three times, and laid on his side.

“Taking care of a new litter? Hmph.” She looked over the gathered group, “I’ve received a complaint. Do any of you know what this might be about?”

Many of the rabbits were looking around at each-other, but at the back of the group, one went very still, and she stared it down. Soon, the other bunnies cleared the space between Minervie and the still rabbit.

Minervie walked briskly up to the still rabbit, and cracked a vial, pouring the contents over its head. It transformed into a gruesome dark skinned goblin. The mother of this horned rabbit fainted.

Minervie addressed the twitching new goblin, “I was visited by a field mouse, who told me that one of you was chasing down their kin and whacking them on the head. What do you know about this? …You will find yourself able to speak in this form.”

The former horned rabbit made some awkward noises, but then found its goblin voice, “Little Chip sang of a great horned rabbit who was granted a name by, uh, scooping up the field mice and, uh, bopping them on the head.”

Minervie had a confused look for a bit, and then realized the nursery rhyme the goblin was referring to. She shook her head, “One, the song is about a common rabbit who already had a name, but the name gives it no power. Two, the end of the song is that the rabbit ends up like you, now, turned into a goon for its cruelty. Three, you will never do that again. Finally, get some sleep, and you will regain your original shape.”
