Prompt Word: Chest

Minervie and Chip 40

It was dark, and a few hours after the day cruise had come back to dock. Minervie and the bartender, Gungan, had been talking since. Minervie was sitting on an unclaimed chest near a wall off North Quay.

Gungan said, “Okay, okay, but then how did you know I was born on this river?”

Minervie laughed, “Total guess! Your name means frog, so I took a leap to the water’s edge.”

Gungan looked at her, “Then, how did you know my name!?”

Minervie smiled, “Because I’m a witch! But also, when that purser called your name to get your attention.”

Gungan laughed loudly at that, “You are a funny lady.”

Minervie stood up and looked him in the eye, “Tomorrow, I am heading to Tibrogargan, the sacred father mountain. There is a cave near the top, I plan to be at that cave in two days. I wonder if you care to join me on my journey there?”

Gungan cocked his head, “Only there?”

Minervie giggled, “You don’t have to believe for something to be true. You heard me say that I am a witch, and you chose to think it is funny. This cave near the top of the most sacred mountain is the magical focus I will use as my departure point to go back home. I think it would do you good to go to that place.”

Gungan felt conflicted, “I’ve never been, I can’t be your guide!”

Minervie half turned facing East toward a warehouse, “I HAVE been there. I don’t need a guide, but I think you do. I’m at The Orient, mister fake Chinaman. Queen Street, which starts right up there, and it’s a half-hour walk to Ann Street, so take the tram. I’m heading out after breakfast if you decide to join me.” Minervie turned her back and started walking away, “If not, I’m glad I met you anyway.”
