Prompt Word: Lap

Minervie and Chip 47

Edna came out of the kitchen, and started putting food on the table in the dining room. “Come on,” she called from the other room.

Gungan and Minervie stood up and headed through the open doorway to the dining room. A serving bowl of rice and goat and other spices that neither could guess at awaited them. Edna came out with a tea kettle, and suggested they all sit.

Edna asked, “Gungan, do you pray before meals?”

Gungan replied, “No, but I can?”

Minervie chuckled while Edna said, “No need then, dig in.”

Gungan interrupted then, “Thank you for this meal, Miss Edna. It looks wonderful.”

Everyone just stared at each other, none wanting to be the first to grab the serving spoon. Edna ended up serving them all, just to break the stand-off.

Minervie said, “Right after this, I need to fly out.”

Embarrassed for being brought here by a woman who sounds like a lunatic, Gungan choked on his rice, and quickly gulped down tea.

Edna, stared at Gungan, and spoke to Minervie, “Minnie? What does he know?”

Minervie sighed, “I have held nothing back, but the words have mostly hit a wall. Can I borrow a broom?” Gungan’s face was more and more confused.

They spend the rest of the meal with Minervie describing what happened, and prompting Gungan to fill in the parts she wasn’t there for.

After the meal, Gungan helped carry dishes to the kitchen, and then they all went out, with Edna’s best broom, to see Minervie off. Gungan had that deeply confused face again.

Minervie said, “I’ll be back before dawn. You two get along now.” jumped onto the broom, and proceeded to fly a lap around the property while gaining altitude.

Gungan was whispering something to himself, as Minervie took off towards the South-East. After a moment, Edna put her hand on Gungan’s shoulder and he jumped.

Not removing her hand, Edna gently spoke, “Yes, a witch, and so am I. She and I do the same type of work, too. She’s a bit of a mentor to me. Come inside, you probably have questions, and so do I.”

He was frozen like a startled prey animal, so she added, “If you decide to run, do not go into the West wood, there are predators there that will be attracted to your fear.”

I don’t even know which way is West,’ he thought to himself. At that he nodded slowly, and allowed her to lead him inside.
