Prompt Word: Bug

Minervie and Chip 50

Edna started as slow as she knew how, “Have you heard of a ward?”

Gungan squinted, “Like in a jail?”

Edna shook her head, “Like the phrase, ‘To ward off’. In this case: guard, protect.”

Gungan just nodded.

Edna continued, “The very timber you are leaning against is a ward. It protects me. It keeps the unwanted away. If the colonists try to come here, they will get lost. Same for magical creatures, animals and even the lowly bug.”

Gungan moved from the central timber, suddenly worried.

Edna drooped her head and shoulders, “If it were dangerous, I would not have let you near it.”

Gungan stared back, “But I cannot harm it?”

“Not without an axe or a lot of magic and talent.”

“So, what does witch mean? I am named Gungan, and I have not been turned into one, but Miss Minervie and her flying broom, and I don’t know.”

“Gungan, you have been nothing but polite. You have not threatened me or Minnie. We will not turn you into a frog,” Edna was trying to sound reassuring.

Gungan was just more wary now, “Wait, so you are saying you could?”

Sigh, “Turning humans into frogs is possible but is so much work. Days of preparation. If I need to defend myself, rebreaking all of the bones Minnie fixed up would be much easier.”

Gungan got that puffed up strong man look about him, and Edna cut him off, “I’m sure you are a tough man, but it would take six men to hold me down, and for Minervie it would probably take 10, if they could all get close enough.”

Gungan knew in his heart that he wasn’t a tough man, but he’d thought he’d at least be tougher than this young lady in front of him.

Edna continued, “Let us talk our family tree.”
