Prompt Word: Temple
Minervie and Chip 51
Minervie’s first stop was what the locals politely called high density housing, South of the Brisbane River. “I’m looking for a Frank Jones, and if nobody by that name exists, someone who works near North Quay. She handed to man who’d answered the door a dollar. I owe him, but he disappeared after helping.”
The man took the dollar, and shrugged his shoulders, “You’re welcome to come in, miss, but I can’t guarantee your safety.”
Minervie put on her best little old lady innocent smile, “I’m sure nobody would be that horrible.”
She passed him by, broom in tow, walked the whole first level of bunks, and was wondering if her stolen hospital paperwork was wrong, but as soon as she was halfway up the stairs, she magically caught the scent she was looking for: Gungan’s blood.
She found the dirty laundry sack at the foot of a bunk, and shook the leg of the man who was sleeping there. His eyes shot open immediately, and he looked at Minervie, sat up and made sure to look past her for a threat.
Minervie whispered, “Are you Frank Jones?”
He stared back at her, unflinching.
Minervie continued, “It’s no matter. You are going to tell me everything you know about the injuries of the man you dropped off at the Royal two evenings ago.”
Presumed Frank deadpanned, “Who?”
Minervie spun her broom, pointing the handle towards his temple, still whispering, “Do you drop that many people off at the Casualty Department?”
He grabbed the end of the broom, to shove it away, but found it quite immobile.
Minervie, holding the broom in place with just one hand, leaned in and said, “Not everything is as it seems, but I’m going to assume you were the one who hurt my friend if you don’t start talking.”
Presumed Frank struggled, and ended up in a great deal of pain before he finally relented and started talking. When Minervie was about to go, she frowned, “You could have saved yourself a great deal of pain if you’d have just said your peace at the start.” She dropped a tenner on his bunk, and went out the way she came.
