Prompt Word: Go

Minervie and Chip 55

Halfway through eating Edna’s breakfast, Gungan finally thought to ask questions. “My bruises are almost healed. I’m able to use my lips without pain. The discoloration will take some time, but it’s barely noticeable with my dark complexion. Why three weeks?”

Minervie looked at him, “Three ribs, both arms, both legs: All broken. Had the Royal actually taken care of you, instead of sending for me looking for prepayment, you’d have been in a full body cast for at least that long, if not longer.”

Gungan did a double-take, “How?”

Minervie cocked her head.

Edna interjected, “How did they know to send for you?”

Minervie nodded, “Oh, my name and the hotel I was staying in were on a piece of paper in his pocket.”

Gungan nodded, “Okay, fine. So I’m supposed to be in a body cast somewhere. Why with one of you?”

Edna grabbed at this, “Do you know someone who has no ties to Brisbane where you can stay and be sure that nobody else you know will be able to find you?”

Gungan looked down as Minervie took over, “Your landlord thinks you are at a Catholic mission hospital. I said I was a nun from there, come to pick up some things.”

Gungan looked up with a skeptical look, “I don’t know of anyplace like that.”

Minervie nodded happily, “Good, I wasn’t sure. If no such place actually exists, all the better.”

Gungan shrugged, “So what can I see if I go to New York?”

Minervie frowned, “My home, my grandson. Maybe some of my neighbors.”

“What about the City?” Gungan asked.

Minervie replied, “Oh, I see. There’s train service from my village into the city, but it’ll be three miles of walking through hills and snow to get from my home to the station. I won’t mind you doing it, but you’ve never experienced that kind of cold unless someone locked you into an ice truck for an hour or more.”

“Snow?”

“It’s winter there.”

“Oh, I think I knew that.”

Minervie pushed her chair back, “It’s time to go.”

Gungan pushed his chair back as well, “I cannot decide.”

Minervie nodded, “Then that is your decision. Don’t leave Edna’s care until I come back. You should both accompany me to the top of Tibrogargan.”
