Prompt Word: Pâté

Minervie and Chip 59

Minervie was at the village grocer with Chip and Peter in tow. Well, the children were at the spinning comic rack at the front of the store, busy debating about which titles they would try to get Minervie to buy for them.

A heavily accented French voice called to Minervie, “Escuse, do you know, uh, is this any good?” He was holding a can with the label, “Pâté de Froi Gras”.

Minervie looked at the man and shook her head, “I have never tried it, but generally, canned goods are too salty.”

The man let his shoulders slump and then let go of the can, but it just hovered there.

Minervie grabbed the can, and put it back on the shelf. “Gówno. I don’t know who you are, or why you are doing this here, but this is too public a place for it, and I have children in my care.”

“I am Marc.”

Minervie scowled, “I don’t care who you are. If you want to talk, then come find me at home.” At that she turned on her heal, and went to the meager winter produce section.

Chip and Peter ended up with all six comic books they were debating over.

Meta

Todays word can be the English, pate: The crown of a head, but that use is fairly obscure. Minervie, wouldn’t know it.

Pâté, on the other hand, is fun, as it literally was only available in the US as a canned import until the 1980s, and only the Froi Gras variety, and thus many of us Americans consider Pâté and Froi Gras to mean the same thing.
