Prompt Word: Coke
Minervie and Chip 60
Leaving the grocer with Peter and Chip in tow, Minervie loaded the kids and her groceries into her 1950 Studebaker Champion, in Turquoise, and started to head away from home.
She got caught up at a Rail Road crossing. Thirty hopper cars, all marked “Coke Express” lumbering by down the river tracks. With no end in sight, Minervie decided to drive up river to maybe find the end of the train.
“Grandma, do those cars really carry Coke?” Chip asked.
Minervie was feeling impatient, so was curt, “Coke means more than one thing.”
As she was driving, she found something better than the end of the train. A dip in the road that went under the rail tracks here, so she took the right. Peter slid into Chip, and they both pressed hard against the back door.
Giggling, the boys were thrilled. “So what coke is that?”
Minervie said a quiet chant, and the boys were asleep.
Eventually she found the Post Road, and turned South again, she pulled into a service station, and parked near a pay phone. She grabbed her coin purse, and got out to use the phone. She dialled the six digits into the rotary, and at the operator’s request, she dropped three dimes.

Phone: “Hello?”
Minervie: “Mike Item Nan Easy Roger Victor Item Easy. Unexpected contact. Please advise.”
Phone: “We tried to reach you, a survey agent named Marc…”
Minervie simply hung up the phone without listening to the rest. She was deeply relieved. Chip and Peter both woke, having slid to the floor of the back seat they were both rather confused, she decided she would get them some bottles of pop.

Roger, in it’s sense to mean “affirmative” was derived in World War 2 as the Military pronounced alphabet stand-in for “R”, as in “received”. It was popularized through post-war movies. The new system, was created in Canada specifically for private aviation in the mid-1950s, but was only initially used by pilots.
