Prompt Word: Skate

Jeff: Watch out for stingrays.

Kev: What are you talking about?

Jeff: It’s the beach, you are in the water first, shuffle your feet.

Kev: What does that have to do with a sports car?

Jeff: What? No! It’s a flat fish, with a stinging tail.

Kev: Wait, you mean skate?

Jeff: No, I said shuffle, why would you try to skate in the water?

Kev: I’d swear we’re talking different languages at this point.

I realized I was remiss in not bothering to clarify that, yes, skates and rays are different species “orders”, but they look almost the same, and … having grown up in Florida, I absolutely knew people who called all of these flat fish with long tails one or the other, regardless.

Honestly, this is even more confusing in that Eagle rays and Manta rays are Rays, but not stinging rays.

  • Skates lay eggs (in an egg case called a Mermaid’s Purse).
  • Rays carry their offspring to term.
