The first priority for the party was to survey the wall and ceiling above where their companion, Jake, had been crushed. None of them believed that it had been a fluke of erosion, but they weren’t so stupid as to not look. Kieff and Bowen pulled some climbing equipment out of their packs and tied two ropes to two grappling hooks.
The few lanterns made more shadows than light, and Bowen freely admitted that she has better night vision than himself, so Andi tossed the hooks into dark crevices on the upper reaches of the wall. It took seven tries before both hooks were set.
Kieff, on the other hand was the best climber, so he went up first. At about 7 meters up, he called down, “Uh… Hey, there’s a violet glow up here.”
