Prompt Word: Defect
Hunter James 13
Wicker was facing a weird situation. He knew full-well that James had a history of petty theft, and that to the Count’s people, that just means he hadn’t been caught in a while. He took a breath, “You have a history of crime, the court knows it, and the guard knows it. You are locked up, and a lot of people are going to want to keep it that way.”
James was almost whining, “I haven’t done a crime in ten years. What was I supposed to do?”
Wicker had been doing this too long, and had no sympathy left to give. “You were supposed to report a crime when you think a crime is being committed.”
James eyes went beady, “So I say what I think I heard, then maybe it turns out the job was just nearby trouble, and I never work again. That is … cur i gcéill”
“I don’t know what that means,” Wicker suspected a foreign curse.
James, “How to translate, a fake, broken, defective.”
Wicker was now looking down his nose, “All criminals think like you.”
James stared back hard, “I ye ain’t here to help, why ’re we talkin?”
